Fit for Me 21/52

I feel like I am in a really good place with my body. This has definitely kept me more accountable to being more active. And we are at the midpoint of the year!

What I did last week:

Thursday-I did a 2.5 mile walk/run with just the dogs.

Monday-I went to BodyPump for an hour. It was nice to get back into a class. I got through every track except shoulders.

Tuesday-I did a 2 mile walk/run with the dogs.

Impressed by:

I am impressed that even after a month out of BodyPump, I was able to get through almost every track. Shoulder track I always struggle with, so that was no suprise.

Struggled with:

I really failed to keep up with my plank and push-up challenge. I just kept forgetting. I finally printed them off so I can have them on my nightstand. I have done it the last three days consistently.

Did I meet my goal from last week?

I did meet my goal to work out at the gym. I missed BodyPump!

What is my goal for next week?

To do some real full-on push-ups during this challenge. I have never really been able to do them up on my toes. I am hoping to work up my push-up stamina so I don’t have to stay on my knees.

Fitness Thoughts:

We are in the sweet spot temperature wise where it is not too muggy or hot, but still fairly cool. It makes it so much easier to want to go workout when you aren’t feeling like you are walking into a cloud when you step outside. Although it has been raining a lot here, which is why I missed Saturday and Sunday workouts. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it in the house.

What I did last week:

Wednesday-I walked the dogs with George for a mile. I need Tom’s schedule to even out!

Thursday-I did a leg workout at home after George went to bed. I also started my plank and push-up challenge.

Sunday-I walked the dogs and George for almost 1.5 miles. I keep pushing the limit! Our Tula got here, so I got to test it out for the first time on a walk here. George loves being carried period, and he falls asleep almost immediately. I feel like he stayed put a lot better than our cloth carrier on the walk.

Monday-20 minute ab workout as I was watching the awkwardness that is the Bachelorette.

Tuesday-So we go a little bit further each time we venture out as a pack. George and I walked the dogs close to 2 miles last night. What?!? We are getting pretty good at this.

Impressed by:

I am impressed that I am able walk the troupe without several injuring any of them or myself. I get a little more confident each time we go out together. (But I am hoping that now that Tom’s schedule has switched, he can take over dog duties.)

Struggled with:

Granted I didn’t do my planks and push-ups everyday, but I really don’t feel that I struggled with anything this week.

Did I meet my goal from last week?

My goal was to start the push-up and plank month challenge. Well I did start it, three different nights. I would remember one night and then forget the next. So Monday and Tuesday was the first time I did it two days in a row. Hoping to hit day three tonight.

What is my goal for next week?

I want to do a workout at the gym. I hate paying for the gym membership and not using it. Unfortunately our schedule hasn’t allowed me to get to a gym class as easily with George and dog responsibilities. But this next week it is going to happen!

Fitness Thoughts:

I got cat-called twice last night on our walk. I have a few things that run through my mind as early twenty year olds hang out their car windows hollering and whistling at me. First my mother side says “Do you not see that I am unavailable to you…there is a child strapped to my chest.” Then my feminine side says “That is disgusting, and really do you think that is appropriate to act like we are in the wild trying to mate?.” Then my basic woman and human side (and maybe the mom side again) says, “Yessssss, I still got it.” Let’s talk truth…it was flattering at the same time it was disgusting.

What I did last week:

Thursday-I was going to play volleyball, but it was cancelled. Since our cousin was watching George already, I took advantage of having some alone time with the dogs and took them for an hour walk.

Sunday-We had planned on going hiking as a family, but the rain spoiled that plan. We ended up doing a 30 minute stroll through our neighborhood.

Monday-20 minute ab workout as I was bawling through Monday’s episode of Dancing With the Stars. My emotions got a workout this night.

Tuesday-I have gotten cocky, and I attempted walking the dogs with George again. We did just over a mile. George doesn’t seem to mind; he just falls asleep in the wrap. The dogs get some attention they desperately need. And my whole body gets strained. So it’s a win for everyone I guess.

Impressed by:

I am just impressed that I am keeping up with this. I think this is the most motivated and consistent I have been with working out for a couple years. Go me!

Struggled with:

Nothing major this week. I was feeling pretty good about myself with my birthday and Mother’s Day. No time to struggle when everyone is celebrating you right?

Did I meet my goal from last week?

Well we sort of went on a hike. We still did a family walk which is essentially had the idea of my Mother’s Day tradition at heart. I do want to do some exploring in the area. There are some great nature trails and parks that we have to take advantage of!

What is my goal for next week?

I actually am going to do two challenges for the next month. I want to work on both my planks and push-ups. So I found two options on Pinterest that I am going to follow. They both seem to be manageable and start small and increase slowly each day. So my goal is to start it.

Fitness Thoughts:

Walking really can be a workout. I think people push it aside all too often to be easy, but man do I get winded sometimes walking those dogs!

Have you ever done a plank or push-up challenge?

What I did last week:

Thursday-30 minutes on a bike

Saturday-1 hour of BodyPump. I actually got through all the tracks! I did have to weight down on a few tracks, but I made it all the way through.

Sunday-I participated in the March of Dimes walk with my sister-in-law. George and my niece, Ava, were there too, but they did a lot less walking. When I signed up for this event, I thought it was a 5K walk, but we ended up doing only one lap in this park that was maybe a quarter of a mile before they did the programming for the event. So Emily and I ended up doing our own thing and kept walking for 45 minutes. It seemed like a lot of hype for a 5-10ish minute stroll.

Monday-20 minute ab workout.

Tuesday-30 minute walk/run with the dogs.

Impressed by:

It has been a long time since I have gotten through an entire hour of BodyPump, so I was impressed with myself on that.

Struggled with:

This week was a good week physically and mentally. I can’t really think of anything I really struggled with. I was pretty proud of my workouts. Long time coming!

Did I meet my goal from last week?

I did meet my goal, sort of. I wanted to add planks to my ab workouts, which I did the one day I did the abs. So I met it, but I still feel like I could have done planks more days.

What is my goal for next week?

I am going to up my last goal and try to do a plank at least 3 days next week. I have a couple plank challenges pinned so maybe I will whip one of those out.

Fitness Thoughts:

I want to talk about kids working out. I think it is great to educate children on fitness and to start creating habits early about physical activity. What I don’t think is great is not teaching them proper technique, especially with weights. There have been several weeks that there have been kids in the BodyPump class. I think that is awesome! However their technique sucks. Their parents just tell them to keep going and suck it up basically. And here they are hunched over with a bar on their back doing squats or flinging a bar sporadically with shoulderpresses. I am just waiting for them to pull something right there because it is obvious their parents got them too much weight. Fortunately, the instructor on Saturdays is phenomenal, and she usually spots these issues and walks around to help fix them. She is really good about showing the right techniques and making you feel ok about only doing body weight. It just bothers me to watch the parents encourage the poor form when their little bodies are in such a growing period. If I was closer to these kids, I would try to say something. But inevitably they are usually set up several people over if not across the room. I don’t know if that would be me overstepping my bounds, but it hurts my heart knowing that these kids could get injured or at the least starting poor habits. (And yes I watch everyone else in the class through the mirrors…)

If only it were that easy…

Have you done a plank challenge? Do you see kids in your gym?

Also I am answering all your questions tomorrow, so if you have any to add, please check out this post!

What I did last week:

Wednesday-20 minutes of Ab stuff.

Thursday-I did an at-home workout for my legs. I held George while I did 5 sets of squats, lunges, and calf raises.

Saturday-1 hour of BodyPump. I got through every song except triceps and shoulders (no surprise there). Triceps I am usually good at, but I tried to up my weight to soon. Note taken body.

Sunday-This day was interesting workout wise. I set out early in the morning to walk the dogs, but it started pouring so we circled the block and maybe completed a quarter of a mile. It looked like it was going to rain all day so I planned to do two rounds of stairs for 10 minutes. I completed my first set during George’s first nap. Then the weather cleared up so I figured I would take the dogs out again. We ended up doing around 30 minutes of walking. My calves still hurt from those stairs though.

Tuesday-30 minutes on a treadmill. I did the trail workout, which is basically a hill workout but it randomly changes for you.

Impressed by:

Attempting my workout in so many ways on Sunday. You really do have to make the time.

Struggled with:

I forgot to work out on Monday which is usually a short ab day. I was too excited about looking at kid’s book for a book party I was part of on Facebook. So I struggled with that distraction and also not buying all the books. (I didn’t buy all the books, but I wanted to!)

Did I meet my goal from last week?

I did meet my goal. I actually really liked the preset workout on the treadmill. I wasn’t able to run all of it because I thought I would fall of the treadmill at an incline any higher than a 5, but it was still a great workout. It was nice to just let the incline change randomly instead of having to worry about changing it myself.

What is my goal for next week?

I want to add planks to my ab workouts. Ugh I always feel like a wimp at BodyPump because I wobble like crazy even just on my knees. I want to get better at this.

Fitness Thoughts:

I know I talked about treadmills last week, but does anyone else look at the person next to them to see how they measure up on a treadmill. I hate when someone gets on the machine next to me because I feel like I am in competition with them. I rarely win though…

Advice on adding planks to my regiment? How do you find time when you workout plans go sour?
