Book Review: The Methuselah Project

I did receive this book complimentary from Litfuse Publicity Group for my review. These thoughts are my own.

Methuselah-Project

I will give this book a 4/5.

I liked it, but it wasn’t a love love for me. It was a fun quick read though that a put a different spin on historical fiction. That element is why it gets a 4 instead of a 3. I like to see something new!

The plot follows two main characters:  Captain Roger Greene who is an American pilot in WWII, and Katherine Mueller who is part of present day. The chapters bounce back and forth between Greene and Mueller. I thought this was a unique perspective to have two different time periods telling this story.

And part of that is because of an experiment that Captain Greene is part of, well captured for. The experiment was conducted by the Nazis to create a Methuselah man, or someone who would live MUCH longer than the average. The experiment is deemed a success with Greene, but then he is kept in a cage (not aging) for over 70 years while they try to figure out why and how after the creator of the project died in a bombing. The first half is the build up of his captivity, and then you hit the climax of the book where he manages to escape but he is now in a world that is so foreign to him since he hasn’t seen daylight in 70 years. Not to mention that his captors had been lying to him that the war was still waging between the Nazis and the rest of the world. Katherine’s twist on the story is that she is connected to the group that has been holding Greene captive, but she has had some doubts of her own destiny within the organization. So when their stories collide it is an intriguing plot line.

I have done a lot of research on WWII, and crazy medical experiments ran rampant during that era since the Nazis felt that they had “lab rats” at their disposal. They did things to humans that were despicably inhumane. So this story of keeping someone captive for 70 years is something, while seemingly far-fetched, is believable if the fountain of youth were actually possible. I think the Nazis would have done anything in the name of Hitler if given the means.

This book is really fast paced. The chapters are rarely more than a few pages long, and as I said you are jumping back and forth between Greene and Katherine. There is a lot of action on each page that keeps you enthralled in the story.

I am generally not a fan of science fiction, but the way that Barry wove other elements into the story, I was sucked in. It’s like Jason Bourne meets time travel meets historical fiction, definitely a different way to tell a story. It doesn’t really fit into any typical type of genre. You want to cheer Captain Greene on from page one, so you keep coming back to see what his fate is as a Methuselah man.

I recommend this book if you want something a little different and fun to read. It’s a page turner which in my book is always a good thing!

Post Season in Missouri

For the second year in a row, both Missouri teams are in the post season play.

12139995_10100914318865031_8511307385566631455_oOur family is divided. My in-laws root for the Cards, but in our house we obviously are rooting for the Royals. We have made that no secret.

I am excited to see my team make it again, and maybe we will see them take it all the way this time.

Maybe we will relive the 1985 series between the two Missouri teams.

It is hard to believe that this was just a year ago when we went to the post season for the first time in 29 years. We took advantage of those sleepless new baby nights to watch them play. It was a remarkable time in our lives.

IMG_5488Those baby wrinkles were magic.

And now my bouncing one year old will hopefully bring some more magic.

12113352_10100914319034691_6174924856826151898_oGeorge has got this guys.

We are excited for October baseball. We haven’t had many of these to celebrate in our life time. So we eat it up when we can.

12113513_10100914318600561_5373501788853113333_oI am excited to see the heart.

I am excited to the stolen bases.

I am excited to see team spirit.

I am excited to see the city spirit. Seriously what major league team does pep rallies in the middle of a work day and turns their whole city blue? Kansas City that’s who.

I am excited for others to finally see what we in KC have always seen about the Royals.

Let’s play ball!

This video gives me goosebumps.

If you didn’t see this video, our team spirit spreads far and wide!

Take the Crown! We are forever Royal!

But first George takes his cousin…Royals all the way!

11113861_10100914319159441_4071806865817407007_oWho are you rooting for in the hunt for the World Series? Any other True Blues out there?

Fit for Me 40/52

What I did last week:

Thursday-30 minutes on a bike.

Sunday-We went to a pumpkin patch. If you have ever chased a toddler around you know how much of a workout it can be trying to keep him from climbing into every wagon in sight or falling headfirst into the chicken coop or hay bales. I was exhausted after our two hours exploring there.

Impressed by:

Not really a whole lot…whoops.

Struggled with:

Getting my butt out the door. My mom was here this weekend, and I wasn’t feeling so hot the beginning of this week for my normal workout times. Better luck next week.

Did I meet my goal from last week?

Nope…

What is my goal for next week?

I want to go for a good run. I haven’t really done a good one since my 10k, and I want to get some quality miles under me. (See same goal as last week, trying again.)

Fitness Thoughts:

I am in a rut. There are so many other things that I would rather be doing than working out right now. I need to find a way back into a routine.

This was me yesterday….

How do you get out of a rut? Do you find that you have too many other things that working out takes a backseat?

Talks with Tom #40

I have a couple gems for you this week.

It is probably no surprise that we love food in our house, so we have some great conversations.

IMG_20150822_205619Tom-I love food so much if I were a fairy princess, my name would be Mozzarella. You may think I mean “Cinderella.” No, it’s Mozzarella. And my middle name would be Pecan Pie.

Me-What is your last name, Pringles? (Earlier that day, Tom had tried to Ebay Pecan Pie Pringles. Yes there are such a thing.)

Tom-No my last name would be Dessert. Dessert is always last.

A couple weeks ago, we had our family over so I decided to test out a new recipe on them. I picked something that looked like it would make a lot. You always want more food than what people can eat!

I made this Crockpot Enchilada Quinoa from Chelsea.

IMG_20150920_191544The next day, I was at work when I got these texts.

Tom-I hope you’re happy with yourself.

Me-What does that mean? (In my head I was trying to recall a fight, and I was so confused.)

Tom-This quinoa dip is like a drug. I can’t stop. You did this to us.

Seriously it is crazy good. (And in a crockpot.) I want to make this all the time.

Do you have any crazy convos around food?

In the House

We have now lived here for almost 3 months! While it doesn’t seem like it is that much, I feel like we have always lived here.

We still have a long way to go on our home improvements, but it definitely feels like our house now.

IS99dtxlap32471000000000

The house before we bought it.

Although we still have no pictures on the wall…maybe next month.

We have, however, done a lot of other things. Well Tom has done a lot, and I just keep him and George fed.

So here are some of the things we have gotten done.

We now have a place for a hose. Tom poured this concrete pad so we can put this thingamabob here for the longest hose ever made.

0926151512We now have a storage room. Y’all, I am so excited to have an actual place for storage. Tom built these shelves. We have two sets that hold 5 large storage bins across. Having real storage is life changing.

1002151943aWe are adding motion sensor lights on our fence. Our yard is huge, and it gets like scary dark out here at night. We want to be able to see the dogs out in the yard, so these are the easiest and most cost effective way to light our yard. They are solar powered, and they work really well. We have the front half done, and we are waiting for another sale before we light up the back half of the yard.

1003151036One of Tom’s must have projects was putting up these flag poles. He did all the digging, concrete, and raising.

0926151511aWe have cedar siding, which is nice, but it can easily and quickly turn gray. I also felt like our house didn’t look finished. You can be the judge from the picture at the top of the post. So we decided to stain it this reddish color. We have a different house! If we decide to make this our forever home and do an addition, we will put medal siding up and cover the brick with rock.Tom did this all by himself when I was out of town one weekend. I am super lucky to have such a handy hubby.

0926151510 0926151509And the part that we have just recently started is the craft room. My heart is swelling at all the possibilities here. Tom has just put up the frames. We are waiting until we find some really great deals on cabinetry before moving any further. But one wall is painted and done!

1002151942The house is definitely keeping us busy. Homeownership is no joke.

You can see our full project list as of now on the “Home To-Dos” tab at the top of the blog.

What is your favorite room in the house? How long does it take you to put pictures up?
