Fit for Me 44/52

What I did last week:

Thursday-30 minutes on elliptical.

Saturday-30 minute yoga. I used a video from YouTube. Free!

Sunday-I did a 45 minute hill workout in our driveway. George didn’t want to take a nap so I just put him in the stroller and pushed him up and down our massive hill of a driveway. The plus side is that I could leave the dogs out as well and they chased us the whole time in the fenced yard. Exercise for all!

Tuesday-30 minute on a stationary bike.

Impressed by:

Actually doing 4 workouts. Yess!

Struggled with:

I could have done some other workouts on Friday and Monday, but I sat on my butt instead.

Did I meet my goal from last week?

I did four workouts!

What is my goal for next week?

I am doing some family photos this weekend out on some trails, so I want to get some mileage in afterwards since I am there.

Fitness Thoughts:

Ok so this isn’t about my fitness, but it is about my heart and how it has grown so much for my city!

This video is awesome! There were an estimated 800,000 people at the Royals Celebration in KC!

Just click on it to direct you to the video from MLB.com.

We Deserve This

This has been a long time coming.

WE ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!!!

Insert crazy spastic dancing here!

It has been stressful and tense watching these guys play.

But boy has it been exciting!!!!

It was heartbreaking last year to get so close, but not get that crown. We were determined this year to prove it.

Several times people didn’t give us the a second glance. Many people thought it was over before games were won in the final innings. (I am looking at you Governor of Texas.) But this has to be my favorite pre-mature move…

Even last night, the announcers many times (until the 9th inning…sort of) were favoring the Mets and what Matt Harvey had accomplished with his pitching. And there are still people today saying that the Mets “should” have won.

But never count us out. We WILL win.

How many games have we been down in the final innings just to make amazing comebacks? The last two games being the most recent evidence of how we can rally. In seven of the eleven games we won during the post-season, we trailed by at least two runs during the game before earning our title of the “Comeback Kings.” In six of these games, we were losing going into the sixth inning. THE SIXTH INNING? Who does that?

The Royals, that’s who!

We do things like this play from Hosmer. We mean business. Never turn your back on us.

And watching this is making me cry all over again.

All the feels for this team. While I was alive the last time they won, I was only five months old. So I have practically been waiting my entire life to remember these moments. It is so beautiful to witness this story.
It is truly the essence of what we hope for for great sports teams.

This team is why I love this sport. They never gave up, and they never lost heart. I am getting goosebumps all over again.

It is a team that backs each other up. Every post-game interview I saw in this season the players talked about each other more than they talked about themselves. They really value what they have as a group and how each piece fits together. They are aggressive and scrappy. It’s like watching a Major League Sandlot.

And they will give credit where credit is due.

They have become a family, which is evident in time of need. Not only as a team, but the city has adopted them as family as well. (I am as invested in the Zobrist pregnancy as if I was going to be the aunt to that baby. Just saying they could adopt me in to that family. I am creepily obsessed with this family. #resignBen #keeptheZobrists)

Let’s talk about how a rookie made his first major league appearance in a WORLDS SERIES GAME a few nights ago for the Royals. Or how Colon’s last at bat was 45 days ago, but yet he definitely made one of the best plays for the team last night.

This team just gels well together with every player. Everyone does their part when needed the most.

This team is special. They have the stuff that you can’t teach.

Our city is special. It has been so wonderful to see our town come together and be there for our guys in Blue.

It is about time that others see the magic as well.

KC Pride forever and always.

What a remarkable ending to the season!

It was exhilarating watching everything unfold last night. Well worth the little sleep and screaming with the chance of waking up a sleeping baby.

I just feel giddy! It still is a little surreal that it has finally happened! It was awesome to see my newsfeed light up with blue like the weather radar after the fireworks! I love seeing things like this and this again, again, and again!

Did you watch the game last night? (Here is something for you if you didn’t.)

Have you cried from a sporting event?

Fit for Me 43/52

What I did last week:

Sunday-George and I needed to get out of the house to leave some quiet for Tom to get some rest for his shifts this week. We went for a really long trail run/walk. We were out for a little more than an hour on a gorgeous fall day.

Monday-I did a 20 minute ab workout with my SWORKIT app. Boy am I feeling it today.

Tuesday-Our schedule was a little nuts with a planning meeting I had that evening, so I did some power-walking with George in the stroller for 30 minutes at the mall. Yep I was one of those people.

Impressed by:

That even despite my crazy schedule this week, I made workouts happen. It can be really hard to find the time when you are a parent. I have had to get creative and be ok with incorporating George into the workout.

Struggled with:

I feel good about this week, I don’t feel that it was a struggle after the many many down weeks I have had.

Did I meet my goal from last week?

I did three workout so yes I did! That makes two weeks in a row that I have met my goal. Small improvements people.

What is my goal for next week?

I want to do four workouts next week. While we do have plans this weekend, they are a little more low key to hopefully allow for some good workout time.

Fitness Thoughts:

Quitting is not an option.

George-14 Months

I wanted to still keep up with George’s growth and milestones even though he is now past a year, but I am only going to do it every other month on here. He is still changing so much, and there is a lot I want to remember.

IMG_1864 (1024x683)Weight: He is probably around 25 lbs.

IMG_1996 (2) (1024x683)Health:  This month his health has been all over the place. These last two teeth have been the worst yet. He is at 7.5 teeth. This last one you can see under there but it hasn’t broke through yet. He has 4 on top, and 3 on bottom with another coming through down there. He has had a really bad cough and a few fevers trying to get through this round of teething. And his mood has been at every end of the spectrum trying to break them through. Rough.

IMG_1959Diet: He eats what we eat, however he is starting to be a little more picky. There aren’t many vegetables that he will eat now, and he is not real big on meat except fish. Carbs are still his favorite. The squeeze pouches are like crack to him. He goes NUTS when I pull one of them out. Most days this is how he gets his veggies…He will always eat oatmeal and bananas. We gave him peanut butter for the first time after he turned 13 months, and he was in love. I think the teething has gotten in the way of his appetite, but I have also read that their hunger evens out as a toddler. Things are definitely interesting because one day he will eat something, and then the next day we will eat the same meal and he won’t have anything to do with it.

IMG_2015 (1024x683)Clothes:  He is safely in 12-18 months. He does still wear a lot of 12 month clothes. He is still in size 4 diapers, and we just recently moved into size 4 shoes. We are trying to wear shoes everywhere since George is wanting to walk everywhere. We even walk from the car to the babysitter’s…very slowly.

IMG_2051 (1024x683)Sleeping:  For the most part, he is sleeping from 7:30/8pm until 5am, give or take some minutes. These past two months have been a little rough if I am going to be honest though. Seriously these two teeth are the worst. We have had many more days than I am ok with that George wakes up at 4 am. I think he is also starting to protest the second nap, so we may be pulling that soon. We have serious issues when we travel. He doesn’t like sleeping in new environments, so it takes us a lot of work to get him to sleep when we aren’t home. He sleeps on me a lot when we are traveling.

IMG_1952 (1024x683)Likes: He loves to make noise. He will bang anything on the floor. He loves our racquetball racket. He is usually carrying it around the house at all times. He has started to climb, so he wants to get to the highest point possible whenever he can. He likes the dog food and is always trying to sneak it before we can put the bowls up on the counter. He loves to sweep. He gets somad when we try to take the broom away from him. He is more reactive to music, and he even dances now. He likes to sleep in our bed. He really enjoys taking every toy out of it’s crate or box. It’s a toy minefield in our house. He loves to play “up down”, which is going up and down stairs or over floor ledges. This would be great if he actually could do it by himself safely. Usually we are holding on to him when he is on the stairs. He also really likes to get in all the kitchen cabinets and pull everything out. He is also fond of putting his hand in the toliet. I never thought I would have to say, “George, don’t chew on the toliet seat.”

IMG_1999 (1024x683)Dislikes: He does not like it when I leave him alone. He has started his separation anxiety and screams when we leave. He does not like to be told what to do. Car rides are not his favorite, although I have found the trick of just giving him all the pacys. He does NOT like to sit still. I cannot take pictures of him by myself anymore, which is a sad sad thing.

IMG_1965 (1024x683)Milestones: He is trying to run, which is the best thing to watch ever. There is a hop step that happens as he waddles trying to catch himself when he goes faster than he realizes he body can. He dances now which is so cute. He has started talking. This happened the day of his 12 month appointment when the doctor said she was concerned he hadn’t said anything yet. He said “mama” that night just to prove her wrong. His words are “mama, dada, woof, and dah (dog). He points (he points with his middle finger sometimes…). He shakes his head no. He is much more consistent on waving goodbye. He throws things. He thinks everything is a ball. He makes faces now, and we can definitely see his personality coming through. He is generally a happy guy who loves to explore and be around us.

IMG_1897 (1024x683)Quirks: He is really shy now, even around people he knows. He will run to us and hug our legs and burrow his head in our knees.

We parents are:  Things have been busy. Tom has been on the worst shift this past month with hardly any weekends off so we have hardly seen him. I am excited that he is off this weekend, and we have no plans except to stuff our face with Halloween candy.

IMG_1835 (2) (683x1024)The dogs are: doing wonderfully. George pets the dogs now. He just lights up when he sees them (except when they lick his face). I am not surprised one of his first words was dog. He also gives them hugs on their back. He lays his head on their back and pats them. He is only not gentle on their face. He grabs and pinches their jowls. He also loves to play fetch with their toys. And luckily the dogs are really gentle when George takes them back away to play the game. Watching their relationship is so enduring.

Look how much Gdubs has grown! Look at his legs!

Tie ComparisonWe are having such a great time discovering what it means to be a family of 3 (5 including the dogs). We are loving seeing George’s personality develop even more every day into a sweet little man.

Book Review: I Shall Be Near To You

I really enjoyed this book. (Obviously-historical fiction is my jam.) I will give this book a 4/5.

Here is a synopsis from Goodreads:

Rosetta doesn’t want her new husband Jeremiah to enlist, but he joins up, hoping to make enough money that they’ll be able to afford their own farm someday. Though she’s always worked by her father’s side as the son he never had, now that Rosetta is a wife she’s told her place is inside with the other women. But Rosetta decides her true place is with Jeremiah, no matter what that means, and to be with him she cuts off her hair, hems an old pair of his pants, and signs up as a Union soldier.
Rosetta drills with the men, prepares herself for battle, and faces the tension as her husband comes to grips with having a fighting wife. Fearing discovery of her secret, Rosetta’s strong will clashes with Jeremiah’s as their marriage is tested by war. Inspired by over two hundred and fifty documented accounts of the women who fought in the Civil War while disguised as men, I Shall Be Near To You is the intimate story, in Rosetta’s powerful and gorgeous voice, of the drama of marriage, one woman’s amazing exploits, and the tender love story that can unfold when two partners face life’s challenges side by side.

I have read a lot of historical fiction books, and this book was fairly accurate from what I know. Obviously there are some liberties taken, but I thought she did a great job honoring the integrity of the time. She does write in the dialect that you would hear at that time, which can sometimes be hard to wade through because there are some things that have changed in the English Language, but I find that kind of stuff interesting. She also based this on actual people. There is some added historical facts at the end of the book that I found really interesting. I was not aware of how many women actually chose this life to be with their husbands. What is even more mind-boggling is that they were rarely caught even when they were pregnant! I could not imaging trying to hide my female identity let alone trying to hide a pregnancy on the FRONT LINES. That is remarkable.

As a former military wife, fighting alongside my husband was something that never crossed my mind. Granted the circumstances are much different now, but it does make you think about what they would experience together. That could either make them even closer or push them apart because of the danger. Either way I think I would be highly distracted if I fought with Tom. I would be more concerned about his well-being than anyone else’s including my own that I don’t think my judgement would be clear in all cases. Watching their marriage on the front lines definitely made me think a lot about our own sacrifices we made as a military family. It also made me sooo thankful of the modern amenities and technologies our military has now.

There were parts that were predictable, but she did a good job of writing a story that you wanted to keep reading through despite some obvious plot twists. I also appreciated that she didn’t gloss over the horrendous way the Civil War was fought and the gravity of it all. It may be hard to read, but I think it this was a moving tribute.

Anyway this is a good love story set in historical fiction that I really enjoyed reading.

I did receive this book complimentary from Blogging for Books for my review. These thoughts are my own.
