How We Found Out

When we decided to start trying for the baby number two, I had a lot of anxiety. Since we never tested positive as pregnant with George until I was in my second trimester, I worried that we would have a similar process. However, this time we wouldn’t have a happenstance meeting with a sonogram to find out about this baby. (You can read more about how we found out about George here.)

We had been trying since August so when on October 1st I started bleeding, I just thought my period had come a week early. Being off birth control means that my period had no rhyme or reason to when it started.

That same day, I was running a 10K with my sister-in-law. I thought, perfect, what a day to start the worst week of the month when I have planned to run 6 miles. I had trained fairly consistently for this run, so I was really mad at my body when starting on mile four I was really lightheaded and had to walk most of the last two miles. I have gotten sick and endured cramps on runs before, but I had never been so lightheaded that I thought I might pass out.

Obviously I pushed through it, and finished the race not really thinking anything of the lightheadedness and just blamed it on it being “that time of the month.”

Then I didn’t bleed for the next two days.

On that Monday, I woke up thinking maybe I should just take a pregnancy test. I can’t really explain it but I just thought maybe this is why my body was weird all weekend.

So I peed on a stick and got ready for my shower.

And there it was. A faint blue line telling me it was positive.

I was in shock because I had prepared myself to never ever see the blue line after our experience with George.

I re-read the instructions to double check that a “faint” line was still positive.

Then I took another test from a different brand just to make sure.

Same result.

I am pregnant.

(I took another one a few days later before I met with my doctor, just to make sure too. There were definitely no faint lines that time!)

I hid the tests so Tom wouldn’t stumble on them since he was off that day. I knew I had to wait until after work to tell him.

It was all I could do to be productive that day. I was a nervous wreck with this secret in my belly.

Luckily, Tom had George that day, so I could run to the store to pick up a card for Tom.

In my head I always envisioned doing something elaborate to tell him, but I was just ready to tell him and there wasn’t time to plan something out. So he just got a “Congrats” card with two people high-fiving, which fit us perfectly anyway.

Tom cried when I told him, and then he proceeded to beg to tell everyone we know.

Since I had no idea how far along I was, I panicked and freaked out about telling anyone before we had anything confirmed.

We found out about George when we were 9 weeks pregnant and told the world when we were 11 weeks. So this was a huge difference for us.

I immediately started thinking about the worst case scenario, and wanted to keep this a secret until our second trimester.

Then I remembered an article that I read a while back that talked about why we as women have this idea that we have to keep this wonderful thing a secret and basically isolate ourselves until we are 12/13 weeks pregnant. There shouldn’t be this stigma that we can’t tell people this news that we are pregnant on the off-chance that something were to go wrong.  Here is the article that does a much better job articulating my thoughts. I don’t want to have to pretend this isn’t happening.

Plus trying to have my husband keep a secret for any amount of time is a struggle and an insane request.

But I still wanted to wait a little bit before we shared, so we compromised that we would share as soon as we saw the baby on a sonogram to confirm that everything was moving as it should. (And he could tell our Parents as Teacher facilitator who was coming over that same night.)

Because of some complications (blood clot and severe bleeding), we had an emergency visit where we were able to see the baby and it’s little heart beating at 6 weeks. I then saw it again with a specialist the next week. Everything was confirmed to be looking good and normal even with my history of issues. And here we are a week later, 8 weeks pregnant.

While this story is definitely not as dramatic as George’s story, nor did it take as long to get pregnant, we are over the moon excited about this transition in our family.

Grace Gotcha Day

First-thank you for the outpouring of love and support for our baby on the way. I promise I have more posts to come about that little bundle of joy.

Right now is the time to celebrate our first baby.

Grace.

How have I been blogging for four years, and I have never written about Grace’s adoption? I wrote about Crosby’s adoption here.

Well FIVE years ago TODAY, we brought home this 10 month old little lady.Look how itty bitty she is!

We had just gotten married a few months before. We had no reason to be looking for dogs if I am going to be honest. Tom had just decided to enlist in the Army since the job market was poor, so we knew it was only a matter of time for things to change.

But we decided to look at shelter pages on a whim. We both had grown up with dogs, and we figured it wouldn’t hurt to just see what puppies were out there. (How we thought we wouldn’t actually end up with a dog still makes me laugh.)

We had decided since we had a one bedroom apartment while living on campus, that we would look at smaller dogs. We had settled on a Boston Terrier as our first choice.

These are highly popular dogs, so we knew it may take us awhile to find one. And we were dead set on getting one from a shelter. Rescuing is the only way we wanted to go. It was a couple weeks after we started looking-casually-that we found a shelter that had a Bostie, and it was about an hour away. We called that day to inquire about that dog. He was a two year old Boston Terrier who met our specifications of being potty trained. They warned us that there were others looking at him so we needed to come and fill out an application quickly.

That was a Friday afternoon.

We drove the hour to this shelter on Saturday morning ready to check out our potential puppy. However, they had already adopted out the Boston Terrier. Tom was so upset because we had talked to the shelter the night before and told them we would be there when they opened in the morning. They didn’t say anything confirming that someone was adopting him after they closed Friday. We were both a little devastated and frustrated we drove the hour.

Tom wanted to turn around and write this place off since we felt they weren’t honest with us. I persuaded him to at least take a look at the other dogs there since we had made the drive there.

And there she was.

SAMSUNG

We played with her for a little bit, and we just knew. She was ours.

Her previous owners surrendered her because she ran away all time. (She has never ran away from us… We believe that there may have been some abuse/abandonment as well with the anxiety we have had to work through with her.)

We put in an application before we left. It was heartbreaking to leave her in that drabby room.

We would have taken her home right then, but we had to get approval from my supervisors since we were living on campus. (Which we got almost immediately-Bless the ISU staff for supporting their hall directors pet endeavors.)

Tom called the shelter first thing Monday morning so we could secure driving up that day to get her. Then this shelter told Tom that someone else had put in the application for her before we did, but they were looking at other dogs so we would have to wait until they made a decision. Insert a man on a mission. Tom basically told them that we would come today and get her, and then the other family could adopt another dog. So either they could adopt out two dogs or just one, their choice.

We went up that afternoon and picked her up!

Her name was Izzy, but since she was only 10 months old, we changed it to Grace.

Grace has gotten us through a lot of things, and has pretty much been there for our whole marriage.

She has moved with us three times to three different states. She has endured basic training and a deployment. She has helped me train for half marathons. She has watched us get several jobs, and supported us unconditionally when we both hit rock bottom. She has gone from destroying cages with her anxiety to being able to be out roaming our basement freely while we are gone. She has been a trooper with adding to our family with Crosby and George.

She has been our Saving Grace in so many ways.

I cannot believe it has been five years since we got her. And I cannot imagine life without her.

We love you Gracie girl!

Heyyyyy, Hey Baby!

So we have some news.

baby2-announcement

I have so many things I want to share already so stay tuned for how we shared the news with family, how we decided to start growing our family, and what’s different this time around. (I just need the energy to do some typing, which is hard to come by these days.)

George has had some mixed reactions about the news…

img_2052img_2140

In all seriousness, he has no idea yet what is going on. He does kiss my belly and we say goodnight to baby every night, but he is just repeating me at this point. So if anyone has any pointers on transitioning the older sibling, we are all ears.

And yes, we had to do these pictures on two separate occasions because George is a two year old and hates that his mom takes pictures of him all the time. Well lucky for you George, someone else is coming next spring for me to practice on.

Book Review-40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood

I am always searching for a good devotional, so when this book came along paired with adult coloring pages it really seemed to be up my alley.

This book was tailor made for moms. From what I could see it was a love letter/words of encouragement from one mom to another. The scriptures and devotionals picked were like your own cheering section at the end of the day that we are all doing ok.

I love to color, and I have a really hard time calming down and just being. I, however, find most “adult” coloring books to be too complex and stress me out even more. These coloring pages were fairly simple, and they allowed me to let go and relax at the end of the day. I will say though that I usually do my devotional right before bed, and I did find it hard to do the coloring there. It takes me about 30-45 minutes to color a page, and I found myself dozing off before I could get done if I did them in bed. (This has nothing to do with the author, I am just an exhausted mom.) So I do the coloring while I am watching my TV shows after George goes to bed, and then I read the devotional portion right before bed and write my joys and concerns for the day in the margins.

I have really struggled with making time for scripture and knowing how to pray, so devotional or guide books like this help me in my walk with the Lord.

Each page (or day) had a scripture, a brief explanation of application, and a simple prayer. I like this approach because it helps things come alive for me. As I said then I will add my thoughts for the day in the open spaces.

This is a great devotional for moms who need to focus on self-care but find it hard to do so. It’s things like this that can keep us grounded and be the best for our families. The idea of combining a stress relieving activity with a devotional was genius in my opinion!

Have you tried adult coloring books? What is your way to focus on self-care?

Lately.

September was a beautiful month full of goodness. Here was what we were up to that kept me away from the blogging world.

  • George got his first haircut.

0829161833a

  • I joined the choir at church.
  • I started teaching a college class, which I want to write a post about.
  • We traveled to Iowa for some of my former students’ wedding.

0910161831f

  • George experienced his first tailgate. It was a yummy success in his book.

0917161154a

  • George started a new obsession with trains.

0919162003

  • We went to Silver Dollar City, which is a family theme park in south Missouri. It was George’s first time there.

  • We went to a Chief’s game. Another George first!

0925161827a

  • I ran a 10K with my sister-in-law.
  • We had our first visit with our Parents as Teachers educator. PAT is a really cool program that has an educator from the school district come to your house once a month before they are actually in school to talk about their development. It was really nice for her to talk with us about George’s milestones and what is upcoming.
  • We went to our local pumpkin festival. Look at how much George has changed since last year!

This month has been full of tractors and George snuggles along the way as well.

What have you been up to lately?
