Easter Bloopers

We had a great weekend with family celebrating Jesus.

But with the greatness, there were some tears and nap avoidance.

All this gave us some pretty awesome bloopers.

Get ready for the blooper photo dump:  Easter edition!

It’s hard to get a 7 month old to look at you. He has better things to do with his time. This was also his first time in grass/moss. (I actually really love this picture even though he won’t look at the camera.)

IMG_1633 (1024x683)

For real. Clearly, he is too busy for me.

IMG_1635 (1024x683)

I love how every boy around this age is wearing this outfit because this is pretty much the only outfit that can be found for baby boys. Boy clothing selection stinks as far as variety. I swear there is only one rack in most stores for little boys where as there are WHOLE sections for little girls. Boys want to be stylish too!

IMG_1658 (1024x683)

Ava, my five year old niece, just wanted to make funny faces and awkward poses all day.

IMG_1707 (1024x683)

She gives herself direction. She does not like our (the adults) creative process.

IMG_1755 (683x1024)

This is probably one of my favorite shots of her from the day. She was upset with me because I would not eat the flowers with her.

IMG_1783 (1024x683)

We spent a good 20-30 minutes taking pictures of her tricks.

IMG_1799 (1024x683)

Tricks and funny faces, obviously Aunt Stephanie.

IMG_1811 (1024x683) IMG_1872 (1024x683)

So in my mom wisdom, I attempted to get George to take a nap before we did cousin pictures. Well George said that was a horrible idea and refused a nap ALL day. He runs this ship. So of course he was a crankerpot once we tried to do pictures with his cousin.

Presley (the dog) just wants to be a part of the pictures too!

IMG_1926 (1024x683)

Ava thought that flapping his arms would help.

IMG_1943 (1024x683)

It did not.

IMG_1971 (1024x683) IMG_1972 (683x1024)

Not only did we have George as a mess because of Nap Resistance, but Ava also couldn’t remember to look at the camera and smile.

IMG_1994 (1024x683)

It was too much to try to smile and hold G-man.

IMG_2008 (1024x683)

Here she is trying to help him stand by pulling his arm, lovingly of course.

IMG_2040 (1024x683)

We tried distracting George with an egg, but you can’t fool him. He just made it fly.

IMG_2053 (683x1024)

This is by far my favorite outtake. George was clearly a mess from being tired and hating his bare feet on the grass. And Ava was trying desperately not to be touched by George’s slobber. AHHH the slobber!

IMG_2058 (683x1024)

Lesson learned from the day:  do pictures as soon as we can with these two. They were done with our agenda after 5 minutes.

Ava is a great cousin to George, and I love capturing their relationship and how much they are growing.

I don’t have many pictures of George and I, so of course trying for more pictures once we got home was a good idea right? George thinks I am crazy.

IMG_2180 (1024x683)

We do have a couple good pictures from the day. A teacher once told me that if you can capture one solid shot out of a roll (back when rolls of film were a thing), then you did a good job. I think I managed a few good ones that I will share soon, but I will cherish some of these gems as well. Success is in the eye of the beholder.

How was your Easter? Do you have picture fails? How would you get kids to cooperate for pictures?

Forever Royal

Today is the opening day for the Royals.

Who is excited?

ME!

I think all of Kansas City has been counting down to this day since Game 7 ended in October.

Last season was such a whirlwind season for us Royals fans. I wrote about it here, here, here, and here. Obviously I love my Royals and my hometown. (I may have teared up a bit rereading those posts.)

Last year was the first year I have not been to a game at Kauffman, so I am excited that we are now only a quick 2 hours away. I already have several trips planned to see my boys in blue! I CANNOT wait for the game at the K!

So here is to another fun filled season with America’s team!

I also am looking forward to taking our good luck charm to his first game. I am still convinced that this little slugger’s birth was what pushed us into the World Series…jk (only kind of). We have lots of baseball goodness planned for George in the upcoming months!

All is right now that baseball is back!

Let’s Go Royals!

Are you as happy as I am to have baseball back? Does your team play today? Are you Forever Royal? (If not, you should be!)

It Must Be Easy

You know when you hear something being passed around as truth and you know in your heart that what is being said is no where near the truth?

Well that is how I feel about how cops are being portrayed these days. Now, I understand my bias because my husband is one, but I also believe that gives me the right to speak up about truths that I see.

There are a lot of things being said about who is being hired as a cop and that departments need to up the ante on their qualifications. I am not sure that these people who are making these statements are even aware of the process that most law enforcement officers go through in order to get hired.

My husband was practically in a law enforcement job search for seven full years before he was officially offered a position. He started his first internship two years prior to his first application. So really he had been after this officer job for almost an entire decade before he was hired. Each time he was told no, he went after another credential to add to his resume. To get the job, Tom had to get a degree in criminal justice, have various internships, and go to war for this country. He has applied to positions in 3 different states (Missouri, Texas, and Iowa). He has been in the process in large cities, small college towns, county departments, and various sizes in the middle. There are several departments that he applied to more than once as well.

To say we know a little bit about police hiring processes would be an understatement. There is a file box completely devoted to his hiring search history.

So what does a person go through in a police officer process?

Again Tom has been through between 25-30 different processes, and all of them have similar ingredients. They may vary on when each step occurs, but generally we have seen each of these in every process.

1. Application.

  • Usually this is pretty basic. It establishes that you meet the minimum state requirements to be a police officer. If you meet the qualifications, you are allowed to test at this point.

2. Physical Training Test

  • Being a physically demanding job, there are some standards that they want to make sure you can meet. It is always a series of push-up, sit-ups, and a run. Some departments will have an obstacle course or a flexibility test as well.

3. Written Exam

  • This is a test that measures your general knowledge and critical thinking skills. It is a standardized test that you can’t really study for.

These are generally the first steps. If you do not pass these, you do not move into the next round.

4. Background Check

  • This is the worst part. Some can be 80 pages long with the documentation you provide. You have to sign a waiver that they can access all kinds of records or contact anyone in the packet. The background check is really your full life. Every address you have ever had, any roommates and their current address, full work history, references which cannot be a repeat of any person you have already listed, bank information, and so much more. They ask for the password to your Facecbook and email. Tom even had to list all of my parents information. They dig deep.

5. Interviews

  • Often there are several of these at varying levels of the process. Usually you will have one with the chief, a panel of officers, and a separate background interview. All of these are pretty intense interviews. Rarely are people asked the type of situational questions officers-to-be are asked. These interviews are attempting to gain an idea of your character and moral being with hypothetical questions. Also typically if you are interviewing with the chief, that means a good thing. But even then that is not a guarantee, as we learned in Iowa.

6. A ride along

  • This is where you ride with an officer to observe a traditional shift. This is one that has been optional at most but required at a few.

7. Polygraph

  • This is an exam that asks you questions you would never have thought to ask someone. This is double checking your background check.

8. Medical /Psychological

  • The department requires you to take a doctor’s physical. It’s very in-depth and includes a normal physical, drug tests, lung capacity tests, and running on a treadmill while hooked to an EKG.
  • You also take several psychological tests and meet with a Psychologist for an interview. They review your background and questions you with some regular questions, as well as some very unorthodox ones.

Each department may have a different order to the process. And some may circle round and do some steps twice.

Some departments won’t look at you unless you have been post-certified, which means that you had to have of already gone through a police academy. More than half of the departments don’t have the funding to put officers through an academy, so they need people to have that already. Many people have to pay for that themselves. (That was Tom’s next step if he was not hired this go around.)

Some departments also don’t look at you if you don’t have a bachelor’s degree.

If you couldn’t tell, this is not a fast process. Most of them take months to get through each round. For the job Tom has now, it took 6 months to complete the process.

I am really tired of people saying that there needs to be a more stringent process to hire cops because I have watched my husband go through countless processes to be told he wasn’t good enough or that someone else was more qualified. His moral fiber was put into question enough times that would break most people. Many would have given up years ago after chasing a dream that long. To watch him wait for 10 years to get this job, it breaks my heart to watch some of these reports come out saying that departments need to be pickier about their applicants and that our officers today are not of good enough quality to be protecting our communities.

What more would people want out of this process? I really am curious what other screenings people think need to be part of this process. Maybe I am missing something.

Tom has been in a process that had 900 people apply for one position. Not the greatest odds even if you have a bachelor’s, are post-certified, are a veteran, and have a great background in general.

Departments have the opportunity to be picky, and they take the time to be choosy with their applicant process.

It’s really offensive to hear, “Oh whatever, I will just be a cop.” Or to see all these news reports saying that departments aren’t doing a good enough job making personnel decisions.

Like this is something easy.

I am here to tell you that it is not easy for someone to be a cop, regardless of how it may be portrayed in the media. First there is the commitment to put your life on the line for complete strangers. Then the courage and stamina it takes to endure one (if not several) of these processes is great. There is so much vulnerability and your entire being is put under a microscope. Every decision you have ever made is put into question and examined thoroughly. The nerves waiting to be hired is drawn out for months if not years. Then to be ridiculed and spit on by the community that you are hired to protect; that takes a mighty person to want to continue in that field. It is not for the faint of heart.

I hope that people do support our law enforcement officers and realize how much thought is put into the hiring process for those wearing blue (or green, khaki, or whatever the badge requires). I feel like departments realize the gravity of the situation and put in the effort to make an informed decision on hiring their officers.

And this is just the hiring process. There is so much more that goes into the training. But that may be a post for another day.

Verses Close to My Heart

My dear friend recently had a daily challenge for a week where she showed her favorite Bible verses. Each day she would “tag” friends to take up the challenge. She tagged me, and I of course did not do it. So here I am trying to make up for it!

IMG_0654 (1024x683)Instead of doing a daily post, I am just going to share my 10 favorite verses/passages here. These are verses that keep me motivated or that I find comfort in. These are in no particular order.

IMG_0705 (683x1024)1. Colossians 3: 12-14 (This was our wedding passage.)

  • 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

2. Philippians 4: 6-7

  • Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

3. Hebrews 12: 1-2

  • 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

4. Psalm 73:26

  • My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

5. Ruth 1:16

  • Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.

6. Isaiah 46: 4

  • Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

7. Romans 5: 8

  • But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

8. Matthew 5:14

  • You are the light of the world.

9. 1 Peter 1:6

  •  In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

10. Proverbs 31:25

  • She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

IMG_0663 (1024x683)These are all verses that provide me hope and strength. The Bible is the ultimate motivational poster and a guide for life. These are verses that are currently providing me faith and encouragement during this time of my life. There are others that I find valuable and may be my favorites in different circumstances or stages in my life. I think the important thing is using the Bible for enrichment and purpose as we struggle to figure out how to be as human as possible and walk as He taught us.

My favorite Biblical stories are those of Joseph and of Ruth. These stories are not confined to a single verse for me, but the messages that those passages give us are ones that I think about often.

I also wanted to share this small business that designs shirts with a focus on positive sayings like this “Jesus Loves Me” shirt that George is wearing. They are super soft! I want to wrap myself up in this tshirt. And I love the simplicity and positivity! She also has necklaces for kids and moms. You can find out more at Love Blooms Here!

IMG_0680 (683x1024)What are your favorite verses? Do we share any?

Just An Average Day

One thing I love about this blog is that it is a documentation of our family. I enjoy reading back and remember how things were at that time and how they have changed/or not since then.

IMG_0786 (1024x683)

So this is what our schedule looks like now with me as a working mom, Tom in the Police Academy, and George being his 6 month self. This is our average day.

  • Tom’s alarm goes off some time between 4:15 and 4:30am. He lets the dogs out first thing.
  • If George wakes up before 4:45 and cannot be soothed, he ends up sleeping with me either on his floor, his rocker, or our bed. If he wakes up before 3:30am, I can usually nurse him for a couple minutes and put him back down in his crib.
  • If he wakes up between 4:45 and 5:20, I wake up and nurse him. Then I just stay awake and start our day.
  • If he is an angel child, I have to wake him up when my alarm goes off at 5:20. Or at 5:30 after hitting the snooze. I will then nurse him, change his diaper and clothes.
  • Tom leaves around 5:15am for PT.
  • After George is ready for the day, I bring the play mat into the bathroom and put George there on the bathroom floor while I hop on the shower. This is always interesting because he is most alert in the morning and loves to babble. So we talk through the shower curtain. At first I was concerned about the dogs messing with him while I was in the shower. But who am I kidding they are divas and crawl back under the blankets while I shower.
  • Around 6am, we have breakfast. George is first with some rice cereal mixed with some other puree. Then I have cereal while he plays on the kick and play. I also use this time to catch up on Instagram.
  • At 6:45, I put George on a blanket next to the bathroom doorway and let him play with toys while I put on make-up and dry my hair. He is mesmerized by my hair dryer! This is also when I listen to my daily devotional speeches.
  • At 7:00, I let the dogs out one last time while I load up the car with every bag imaginable.
  • At 7:15, I brush my teeth while holding George because he has started his morning nap-time fussiness. I also close all the room doors and do a last check of dog destruction potential.
  • By 7:25, George and I are in the car. (Usually I have to circle the neighborhood to make sure I shut the garage door.)
  • We hit the babysitter’s house at 7:40.
  • At 7:50, I head to CC which is 5 minutes away.
  • I walk into my office around 8 am and then do the work thing all day.
  • Tom sometimes gets a long lunch to come home to check on the dogs.
  • I get off at 5pm. Tom does sometimes. If we both are off at 5, Tom picks up George on Tuesdays/Thursdays. I then pick up G on Monday/Wednesday/Friday. But more often than not, Tom does not get off at 5. Either way, George is picked up around 5:15 every day.
  • On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I will go to the gym regardless of if I picked up G or not. The gym childcare ladies love him, so it is a win/win. Seriously they all huddle at the window when they see us walk in and squeal when we come in the door. It’s a great feeling to see him so loved when he is only there a couple hours each week.
  • On Mondays and Wednesdays we get home about 5:30. Tuesdays and Thursdays we get home about 6:30.
  • Tom usually gets home between 7 and 8 after he gets off and then goes to work out. (which is technically him still working) There are some days like tonight that he won’t get home until after 11pm. Real bummer.
  • I feed George some solid food at 6:30.
  • Tom then does George’s bath time right when he gets home around 7. If he isn’t home yet, I do the bath charge. But to be honest some days when Tom isn’t home yet, George just gets a “wipes” bath. Especially on the nights where I have an hour worth of dishes to do.
  • I take the lead on the first bedtime with jammies, story time, last nursing of the day, and then lights out hopefully around 7:30-7:45.
  • We (the adults) finally have dinner at 8:00pm. Lately, we haven’t really been sitting down together to eat just with the way that the schedule has gone. I am hoping once the academy is over we can adjust things so we can sit down formally together again.
  • Rarely does George make it past 8:30 with this first bedtime. So we take turns with the wiggle monster depending on what we need to do. This is really the time that we do any household chores, getting ready for the morning, I catch up on the blog, Tom does his homework, and anything else that needs to be done.
  • We hardly ever spend this time in the same room “being still” during the week because of things that have to get done that night. (We are sooo ready for the academy to be over to have us time again.) Friday nights however, we do go on our Hy-Vee buffet date night, so we don’t worry about any household chores that night.
  • At 9:30pm, Tom gets George’s last bottle ready and then feeds him.
  • Around 10pm, Tom puts George down for the final time of the night.
  • At the same time, I wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I do one last pumping session before bed. I use this time to do my bible study.
  • Around 10:30, sometimes Tom and I will have some time to chat and just be the two of us. Usually we pass out around 10:30 though. It is very seldom that we are awake past 11pm on a weeknight.

The weekends are a lot more fluid, but we do try to keep George’s night time routine the same as much as possible.

There are a few things we do to make things go a little smoother and save ourselves some time.

I still try to pick out George’s and my clothes for the week on Sunday afternoons. I find I spend much less time wondering what the heck we are going to wear when I carve out a half hour on Sunday to lay everything out. It also helps to grab George’s clothes more quickly since he is now practicing to try out for Cirque du Soleil.

I also purchased more pump parts so I am only doing dishes for that 3 nights out of the week which is a huge help! I have a pretty good system now that I set up my computer in front of the sink and catch up on shows while I clean those parts those nights. This makes me feel like washing dishes isn’t so awful with the entertainment distracting me.

Sundays we also do a lot of meal prep for the week so we don’t have to do as much with our limited time during the week. This has been such a saving grace so we don’t have to worry so much about what we are going to eat for lunches and dinners.

I write a majority of my blog posts over the weekend. Having the skeleton done makes it much easier to go in quickly during the week to do some edits. I have a planner with all my ideas written out so I know when I want to post what and can design drafts farther in advance as well.

IMG_0748 (1024x683)

So there you have it. Our schedule is a little messy right now with very little down time during the week. It’s not ideal, but we are making it work right now with our temporary schedule.

Do you have a crazy schedule? What are your time saving tips?
