Walter-16 Months

Weight:  I never remember to weigh him until after he is in bed. He was at 25 lbs at his 15 month appointment. Whoops.

Health: The last couple months have been a little rough. He is cutting his back molars. He has basically had a runny nose non-stop. I think he is going to follow in the big kids’ footsteps and get the allergy cough. He also has had severe diaper rashes. They have been excruciating.

Diet: He is doing great with meals. He is starting to get picky about vegetables, but he still eats really well other than that. He has not met a fruit or a carb that he doesn’t like. His favorite is blueberries, bananas, oranges, and crescent rolls.

Clothes: He is in size 18 month clothes, size 5 in diapers, and size 5 shoes. We skipped right over 12-18 month clothes, partly because he can fit in 18 month just fine. But really, I could not find that size in any of our boxes of prior kid clothes. No clue where that size went off to.

Sleeping:  For the most part he does really well sleeping. He goes to bed around 7:30-8, and then wakes up usually around 8am. He has one nap mid-day. However, if he does wake up, he is a bear to get back down in the middle of the night. It takes a lot of work to get him back down.

Likes:  His new favorite activity is climbing everything. He loves anything he can pull up on or if there are stairs. He loves the movie Encanto. He is obsessed with Daphne and Daisy. He likes the first two pages of any book. He loves playing with the hose, and going outside in general. He loves to get the dirt out of the pots. He loves to brush his own teeth.

Dislikes:  Due to his diaper rash, he HATES getting his pants changed. He does not like any pages past the first two of any book. You cannot have a piece of bread near him without him getting some. The audacity that we have to eat carbs without sharing.

Nicknames: Walt, Wally, Wally Bear, Wallington Bear, Wally Olly, Waller, Wallace, Wallaby, Butters, Sweet Bean, Stinkerdoodle, Waltie baby, Cutie baby, Sweetie baby, Baby guy, and Baby Walter.

Milestones: He is a climber, of all the things. He can follow simple instructions like putting his cup away, and he is starting to know where things are located in the house.

Quirks: My favorite quirk is that he hums while he eats.

We parents are:  doing ok. The past couple months have been fairly difficulty for me at work. There have been a lot of changes and many pivots. It has been exciting to work with my colleagues to provide the best experience for our students, but the resources are slim and we are all just trying to make things work. While it has been hard, it has been cool to see the creative brainstorming we have been doing to get it all done. Tom has been awesome. He is really living his best life and has no complaints.

Big kids are:  doing pretty good. George is working extremely hard to do well in school. It has been fun to see him reading all the things. He got recognized a couple times for awards during the month, so that was heartwarming to see. He also started soccer again, which seems to be a good fit for him. It’s just cool to see him growing and learning. Daphne started soccer again too. She is doing amazing at school. She loves her friends so much. She adores Wally. One of her skills is filling other people’s buckets, and she loves to make Wally the center of her world.

Daisy is: doing great. Wally is her favorite, and they are so cute together. She is still really skiddish, but she is such a great dog.

In case you are curious, here is George at sixteen months and Daphne at sixteen months.

He does not give up smiles easily, but I love his sweet little soul.

Daphne-16 Months

Weight:  25 lbs. She is 85% for weight, 48% for height, and 65% for head circumference.

Health: All her molars came in, so we are all doing better. She is a spit fire when she is moody. I can tell too that she will have allergy issues like the rest of us. She has been a little snotty with weather changes.

Diet: Well, I think we have hit the picky stage. She rarely eats cooked veggies, but she will eat them frozen or in rice form. She loves all fruits but especially blackberries and blueberries. She tries to get into the fridge since she knows where they are, and gets mad if you get in her way. She is not a fan of deli meat, but most other meats she does well with. Chicken will depend on the day. Salmon, she would eat every meal. She will throw a tantrum for Bear Naked peanut butter granola bites and the fruit and veggie packets. We can’t go in the pantry without her running in after us pointing to these two things. She wont eat eggs if you fix them for her, but if I have eggs on my plate she will want every bite.

Clothes:  She is in 12 month clothes. She is in size 3 shoes, and size 5 diaper during the day and size 6 at night.  I just put her in her first real tennis shoes this weekend, and she looks so grown up in them!

Sleeping:  We have been putting her to bed around 7:30/8. If you lay her on her stomach and just pat her back, she just goes right to sleep. She generally stays asleep most of the night. She hardly sleeps past 7am. She still has two naps a day, and she is really sticking to two hour naps. However, we can push her a little when we have something going on, and she can make due with one nap. However, she will tell you that she is ready to go to bed. She just grabs her blanket and goes to her crib on her own, or she will lay down on her whale blanket in the living room.

Likes:  She still loves her robe. She is obsessed with shoes and bags. She adores George and Crosby. My mom is her best friend. She would live outside if we let her, and she loves her water table. She is a little vain right now, and she loves looking at herself in the mirror and in my camera on my phone. Her favorite toys are magna tiles and legos. Her favorite show is Sesame Street with Elmo.

Dislikes:  Diaper Changes. Being told no. Being left alone.

Milestones: This girl is so smart. She is really getting the hang of doing things on her own. She can undo zippers. She can draw a little bit now. She is starting to hop, and she all but runs. She brushes her teeth on her own, and she will have her first dentist appointment tomorrow.

Nicknames:  Daphie, Sisterbear, Sis, and Daphie Girl. The two most common are still Daph and Sister.

Quirks:  When she wants to sit in your lap, she walks backwards to you. She still sucks her finger through the hole in her pacy. And she still will only use the newborn pacies from the hospital. She barks at the dogs. She keeps getting her legs stuck in her crib, bad enough once that Tom thought he would have to break it to get her out of there.

We parents are: doing pretty great. I think we are still feeling out this whole being a normal family with regular hours. Overall it has been an easy adjustment. Making plans has been so nice!  We are able to have weekly traditions, and Tom can be involved in everything. It is more like we are a team at home too, which is definitely an added bonus. He is loving his new job and is feeling valued there. And we are regulars at a restaurant downtown. The owner knows my drink before I even order it! One of the coolest things to happen to me.

George is: like a sour patch kid with her. One minute he’ll be trying to find a pacy for her to calm her down and saying, ” I need to take care of my sister.” Then the next minute he will be pushing her down and yanking toys out of her hands. We are working on appropriate behavior and how to express our emotions even when they are very big emotions.

The dogs are: just the big dopey dogs that they always are. They really have the best life of us all. They do really well with Daph, even though she is kind of always in their way. She is always climbing on Crosby, and he doesn’t seem to mind.

She may look like her daddy, but this girl is making a name for herself.

Here is George at 16 months.

George-16 Months

Weight: He is just over 25 lbs.

Health:  This kid and teething. Seriously, they are just barreling in. He has 12 so far, 6 on top and another 6 on the bottom. He also has four cutting right now. FOUR. The last couple weeks he has been alright mood wise, but his nose is basically a leaky faucet. He has also had a really bad cough the last week working through this round of teeth.

Diet: Not much has changed the last two months. He eats what we eat for the most part. There aren’t many vegetables that he will eat, so he gets at least one squeeze pouch a day as a snack to make sure he is at least getting some veggies each day. He has started eating meat more regularly which is good. Carbs are still his favorite. He still will change his mind on how and what he will eat at any given moment. He will always eat oatmeal, rolls, and bananas. He actually will eat a banana like an adult by holding the peel now!

Clothes:  This little dude grew this last month! He is basically in 18 month clothes. They are a little baggy, but he is way too big for 12 months, and there aren’t a lot of 12-18 months clothes out there. He also sized up in diapers and shoes, both size 5.

Sleeping:  Things have been so different this last month! He is sleeping through the night again-Thank the Lord! And when he does wake up, he usually can talk himself back to sleep. Yes talk himself back-we may have a sleep talker. Last month, I thought he was having night terrors because he would wake up with a bloodcurdling scream and couldn’t go back to sleep. I felt like we were back in the newborn stage. Thankfully that only lasted a couple weeks. We have been phasing out the second nap. It has been an adjustment though because he wants to now take a 2-3 hour nap right over lunch time. We’ll work it out, but I have noticed such a huge difference in his bedtime sleeping. He now sleeps from 8pm-7am. On the weekends he has even slept until 8 (one time 9am)! Sleeping in has never been sweeter.

Likes: He loves the Tupperware cabinet and taking all of the Tupperware out. He is really into putting lids on things now, so the Tupperware has been fun for him. He loves heights and climbing. Now that he has figured it out, he wants to climb everything. This stage is absolutely terrifying because he is not afraid of anything. I am just waiting for the day where he can climb out of his crib. I am having a panic attack thinking about that. He loves to read, play with legos, dog toys, getting into boxes/baskets, and throwing things. He is also really into pointing to things. He loves to make anything a scarf, but particularly loves putting our belts around his neck like a necklace. He still really loves brooms or anything in stick fashion. He got a little swifter for Christmas, and I am fairly positive he would sleep with it if we let him. He loves Christmas lights and trying to plug them in on his own. He also loves putting things in the fireplace. the other day I found it stuffed with Tupperware.

Dislikes: He does not like to be told no. He doesn’t want to take pictures at all. He doesn’t like when I take him off the couch where he has so proudly climbed and now wants to face dive off of. He hates PDA, so we don’t get kisses or holding hands at all. Hugs are very few as well unless he is super tired.

Milestones: He is “talking” a lot, but not many new real words. He did add night night and uh oh to his repertoire. Mostly, he just repeats the main syllable, like right now he is really into Bs. George now will go brush his teeth when I ask. I don’t know how this happened because a few weeks ago he acted like it was torture. He did have his first dentist appointment. He enjoyed his first Christmas tree. We are working on using silverware. Some days it goes well, and others it is a hot mess. He claps and waves bye bye more regularly now with the right timing too. He gets the concept of drawing and holding a pencil. We got some chunky crayons for Christmas so we are going to do a lot more with this development now.

Quirks: He has this evil chuckle when you tell him no, which basically means he is going to do it anyway. He sits in the middle of the kitchen when I get his bottle ready or get a squeeze pouch out. He will even sit when I tell him too, like he is a dog. He crawls into our laps and actually will sit really nicely. This is really the only cuddling he will do.  When I sing him to sleep he grabs my neck and presses his forehead against my chin and giggles while I attempt to sing like that.

We parents are:  We have really enjoyed the last two months with day and midnight shifts for Tom. It has been busy with the holidays, but we have gotten a little more family time. Tom has also been working like crazy to fix up the living space in our basement.

The dogs are: now 5! George and the dogs get along so well. George is now petting them a lot more gently, which is a huge step up from the smacking and intense grabbing that was happening. The dogs enjoy that he is an endless supply of goodies between the spilled milk and food thrown everywhere.

This little man just warms my heart. He is growing so much and so fast!
