Talks with Tom #15

I was in the kitchen working on the scads of Christmas goodies this weekend, and I turned to this.

Me-Do you get a scoop of peanut butter for yourself when you get peanut butter for the dogs?

Tom-A couple times a day for about 15 minutes, I come into the pantry and just eat stuff.

I giggled.

Tom-I don’t want to commit to anyone food and take it out of the pantry. I want a little bit of everything. I do know that I want everything with peanut butter on it.

He put down the chocolate covered pretzels he was eating and picked up the Cheezits and dipped them in peanut butter.

Then he picked up chipotle chedder pretzel bites.

Me-Those things are disgusting.

Tom-Not with peanut butter. (with a mouthful of them)

Me-So is this why the pantry is always a mess?

Tom-Yes. I like to see my options out.

I guess he can eat whatever (no matter how gross) because he is always hungry because of his workout routine. In his defense, he did leg press over 1000 lbs on Friday.

But I would like to have a clean pantry for more than a couple hours…

This weekend, Tom actually watched the Clemson football game with me. I blame the loss on his viewing.

Anyway, this is some commentary from my husband. Talk about loss…

Tom-When I die, I want the funeral to be like a football game. There will be beer and a half time. On one side there would be people who like me, and the other side people who hate me. There would be arguments of which side is right. There would be a ref that came in and make a call that hurts the side that is winning for no reason.”

Long pause.

Tom-Who do you think would be my sponsors?

Tom-Evan Williams.

Tom-Nah it would probably be Iams.

Tom-I would think Jeep, but we would need to time travel to have it be the 1999 Jeep not today’s Jeep.

Long pause.

Tom- And you can do the Clemson chant 1234 1234 T-O-M-I-S-D-E-A-D.

Me-(my jaw on the floor)

The thing with being married to an infantryman is that they have no problem talking and poking fun at their mortality.

So yes this conversation happened, and actually continued with talks about John Stamos and treasure maps at the funeral. Yes part of my duties as the widow is to get Uncle Jesse at Tom’s funeral.

Also I want to note that my husband must really love me because he is making his funeral plans around my love for football since he hates the sport.

Yes this is morbid, but I take the sweet moments where I can get them.

This past weekend we traveled back to Missouri for a friend’s wedding. It was beautiful, and it was great to see some friends from Iowa. I have been really homesick for my Ames people, so it was fun to catch up with a few of them for a bit.

I miss having friends in my office all the time!
(And Tom and I missed the purple memo, but it is ok. We matched in our mature primaries.)

It has gotten a little cooler here, which for me affects my “driving” clothes. Usually I will hop in a car in shorts or comfy running pants and a tshirt. With the temps dropping, my winter driving gear is usually jeans and a tshirt/hoodie.

Tom however is always in shorts.

Always.

Tom loves wearing shorts. He doesn’t really every wear long pants unless it is a special occasion or when he is being mandated. He believes that he should dress for the temperature inside since he wont be outside very long. So you will find my husband in shorts and flip flops all year round. He is all about the maximum amount of comfort.

We were in a mad hunt this weekend several times for his ranger panties. Oh you don’t know what those are? They are shorts that basically show off a man’s leg, and they have the inner liner (panty). They are also made of a silky thin material (panty). Think of 80s men’s basketball shorts or track shorts. Because they are so small, they get lost easily. We thought the dogs may have eaten them at one point this weekend. It was serious people.

Tom's legs

They do make their legs look super nice. And I gotta say, it is fun to watch these Army men push people’s clothing social normities. The things people have called Tom because of these shorts is both funny and awful.

Anyway, naturally I was complaining about it being too cold on the drive home.

Tom- “Yea, I had to bring the winter shorts.”

They are maybe a couple inches of fabric longer than the ranger panties. Shorts are meant for summer to me no matter the length, but even 6 years later I am still laughing at Tom’s perception and infatuation of shorts

He did wear pants for the special occasion this weekend.

I like that the woman behind me is my color block opposite. Love the mature primaries (cardinal, navy, and gold)!

Happy Wedding to Chris and Krystal!

Fun fact, Tom and Chris were in Scouts together. Then I worked with him at Iowa State not knowing until his first day on the job that he knew my husband’s family. Small world!

We have recently decided that we will not be going home for Thanksgiving. In my 28 years, I have only missed one Thanksgiving in my parent’s house, and even then I was able to be with my grandparents in SC for Turkey day.

But being a grown up means that sometimes we have to make tough decisions and be realistic. With the timing and distance along with the dogs, we just aren’t able to make it home for those couple of days this year. Life of a military family I guess.

So while we are sad about missing out on the 3 Glinn Thanksgivings with the noodles, shrimp, and cranberry salad, we are getting more and more excited about the prospect of hosting our very own Thanksgiving for the first time. I have started sorting recipes to create the perfect dinner while also adding a bit of home at the same time.

Tom gets really passionate about cooking meat so he was really pumped about cooking his first big bird.

Tom-  “We could bake a turkey. We wouldn’t fry it because we are grown ups.”

Me-  “My dad deep fries one every year, and you have had it.”

Tom-  “Ok, what I meant was:  I don’t know what I am doing with frying a turkey.”

Me-  “Yea because it is delicious.”

It will be an adventure for sure.

This is realistic for us to do right?

Do you have advice for our first solo Thanksgiving cooking?

Recently when we were home, we chauffeured our 4 year old niece around.

Tom-Ava K, what kind of music do you like?

Ava-My Little Pony, My Little Pony (singing this to us)

Tom-How about Bob Marley?

Ava-Oh, I have never been there before.

She and Uncle Tom have a great relationship!

We were home for her birthday. It was a pretty “roaring” party.

As you can tell, she had a dinosaur themed birthday party. She knows all the dinosaurs names and categories. Did I mention that she is four?

Even though the trip was short, it was fun to be there to help celebrate her day.

My sister-in-law is so creative and did a great job with the theme! I loved taking pictures of the whole day!
