Why I Still Blog

I started blogging three years ago.

Three years ago, I thought this was going to be a fad. It was just something to distract me from Tom’s deployment.

Little did I know, I would still be doing it even now that Tom is no longer active in the military.

So why do I still do it?

1. It’s a release for me. I have always enjoyed writing, and expressing my thoughts this way has been good for my soul. Through this writing, I have been able to open up about insecurities in my life (faith, work, family…). I am not sure I would have faced some things as fully if it weren’t for this space allowing me to open up. (Ripping the band aid off in some ways.) I have been able to embrace some of the hard things by just putting them out there, and found support and people relating to my issues. I don’t have to open up about these things, but I have found that having this space pushes me to be not only honest with others about the reality of life, but mostly with myself about the imperfections and to celebrate the growth.

2. I have really enjoyed connecting with others. Whether that is with my blog friends or people I know in real life, I feel that I have been able to get to know people better through my blog. It’s perfect way for this introvert to do some mass socialization.

3. Free books. Through some connections on these interwebs, I have been able to review books in exchange for a book. Yes, please! I am not going to lie that this is an awesome perk to blogging.

4. I like having a space to chronicle not only my life, but also my marriage and George’s life (which I guess are extensions of my life…). I read back on George’s monthly updates, and there are things I have already forgotten. It is great to have this space to have as a photo diary of sorts to remember our life we have made but to see what we came out of as well.

5. I enjoy it. Plain and simple. Blogging has become a hobby of mine. I like that it ebbs and flows. It is there when I need it, but I don’t feel pressured to do it every day. I get to write about things that I want to write about:  things that I am passionate about, things I find funny, things that inspire me, you know my things. So I will keep doing it as long as it doesn’t feel like a job, and I keep getting something good out of it.

Thank you for reading. While a lot of reasons I blog seem to be for myself, I have really enjoyed the connections I have made with others by sharing my stories. Your comments and messages mean a lot to me. I do hope that by putting my life out there I am able to touch and impact others through my words. So thank you for coming to my space!

Fit for Me 30/52

What I did last week:

Friday-I ran laps in my yard. IN MY YARD. I did it for only 20 minutes instead of the 35 I was supposed to. It was super muggy that night and my yard is a little hillier than I had bargained for. The grass was also taller than it appeared so I was more or less hiking through the grass trying not to fall in a hole I wasn’t aware of. But it was still a great workout that I could just have the baby monitor out on the deck and run around at home. Sometimes you have to improvise. Plus the dogs chased me the whole time so they were tuckered out as well. Extra bonus.

Saturday-The BodyPump instructor that was subbing this week never showed, so I did 30 minutes on a bike and 10 minutes on a rowing machine.

Sunday-Again it was super hot, but I wanted to actually get some mileage in instead of waiting until dark to run around the yard again. Also our gym has the weirdest childcare hours on Sunday. They are pretty much worthless. So instead I decided to not actually run but to take George out in the stroller and explore the Katy Trail by our house. We walked on a gravel trail for an hour (which is 20 minutes longer than my run was supposed to be). I really pushed myself to stay in the 14-15 minute mile walking pace, which is pretty good pushing a stroller through gravel.

Tuesday-30 minute training run, and I did all my minutes.

Impressed by:

Friday night was I was exhausted from the week of moving. And the last thing I wanted to do was workout. But I am glad that I put in some time even if it was just in my yard. Also I love that I have a yard big enough that this is a viable back up plan. Not something I would do every day because of the rolling hills going on, but still awesome to have in my back pocket as an option.

Struggled with:

Working out in the heat is hard, so I obviously didn’t do as well with my runs this week. It was the first week I haven’t done the time as my plan states. But I also am not trying for anything special so I know that it isn’t good to push myself to the extreme just to get a certain time.

Did I meet my goal from last week?

I did get out to the Katy Trail. It is beautiful and should be easy to run if I don’t have to push a stroller.

What is my goal for next week?

I want to hit all my times for my runs. It is going to be a hard week with some of the times increasing dramatically off of last week. And did I mention it is HOT out there?

Fitness Thoughts:

It can be easier to want to work out in the heat when this is your view.

George-11 Months

I am trying to come to terms with the fact that in a month George will be one. What the heck?

IMG_9580 (1024x683)These pictures are going to be a little different because I attempted to do it by myself which was a horrible idea. Every time I would get him settled he would try to face dive off the rocker, so I had to improvise.

IMG_9721 (1024x683)Weight: Little stinker is 21.8 pounds. He looks like a little boy now. I just can’t handle how big he is, and neither can my hips or arms.

IMG_9664 (1024x683)Health:  This has been a pretty good month health wise. He is teething so that has been a little rough. He does not have a fever or an ear infection like he did with his first two teeth. With these new FOUR, he hasn’t been sleeping the best and is really clingy. But other than that, he has been good!

IMG_9858 (1024x683)Diet: This kid can pack the food away. I don’t know how he is eating the quantity that he eats. It’s really astounding. We get him his own kid’s meal now when we eat out, and he eats the whole thing. He is still at only three (4-6oz) formula bottles a day (morning, before afternoon nap, and right before bed), but we will be cutting the mid-day one here soon. He has three traditional meals a day, and several snacks throughout. His favorite foods are blueberries, bananas, pasta, and oatmeal. We have fully transitioned him to a sippy cup. When we moved, I packed all the baby bottles up! Ironically too, we have seen a little less spit up with moving to the sippies, but there are still days that he throws the whole thing back up. He drinks water and apple juice occasionally throughout the day as well.

IMG_9815 (1024x683)Clothes:  He is wearing 6-9 month and 9 month clothes. He is in size 3 diapers. I officially organized all his clothes that he can’t wear into tubs to put down in storage.

IMG_9636 (1024x683)Sleeping:  Sleep has been an anomaly this month. Teething is hard. We had one tooth break through this week, but there are three others you can see right under the surface, so poor thing has to be hurting. Naps have been hit or miss. He usually has one good nap a day, and the other one is kind of a crapshoot depending on the day. We have had to rock him to sleep a lot more this month, but even then he will scream like a bandshee when you first put him in his crib. He just doesn’t want to be alone. He also throws his stuffed animals out of the crib and then gets mad that he has nothing to snuggle with, so again screams his head off. For the most part, he is sleeping from 7:30/8pm until 5am, give or take some minutes. He has started scratching himself when he sleeps, so he always looks like he got attacked by a cat.

IMG_9837 (1024x683)Likes: Food is still the closest to his heart. Now that we have all wood floors and more open space, he is loving his Jeep walker. He can whip it around pretty fast. He loves to dig in his laundry basket and throw all the clothes out. He also loves the dog bones and plastic hangers. He loves to be tickled. He loves being outside watching the dogs run. He also loves to feed the dogs and thinks it is really funny. He loves snaps, buttons, buckles…they are all interesting.

IMG_9695 (1024x683)Dislikes: He is not liking hearing “no.” He is not fond of being in his carseat, which is super since we have a longer commute now.

IMG_9777 (1024x683)Milestones: Well the big one is obviously that he started walking just a week ago!! He does this shuffle that is just too darn adorable.We aren’t talking in human language yet, but he apparently has his own language he likes to yammer on with.

IMG_9690 (1024x683)Quirks: He has started banging his hands on the table. When we pick him up from the sitter’s, he just gets so excited and starts squealing and crawling as fast as he can to get to you.When we ask for a high five he pulls our hand over his own face. He also likes to put his pacy in our mouths. He thinks it is a fun game.

IMG_9725 (1024x683)We parents are:  tired. This has been a very little sleeping month with George’s teething and the move. But we are excited to be in our new house and watch George flourish here. Another thing, why did no one tell me about these awful baby hairs that would take over my head? I hardly ever have a good hair day because these crazy wisps of hair are every where and wont stay down partly due to humidity and partly due to the nature of baby hairs. I need them to get control of themselves.

IMG_9684 (1024x683)The dogs are: LOVING the new house. They just love to be in our yard and RUN. We also have some great windows that they are just having the time of their life watching out of. Things are going to be getting a little more interesting around here with all three of them walking around now. We all took a tumble the other day in the yard because the dogs have no breaks, and George has no balance (and mom was not fast enough). I am loving watching them grow together.

IMG_9710 (1024x683)You can see him developing his own personality. He is going to be a firecracker that is for sure. For the most part, he is really really happy (except when he isn’t getting is way.)

Fit for Me 29/52

What I did last week:

Friday-40 minute training run. I actually ran over my lunch break to try to give myself some time back after work, but I was a HOT SWEATY mess when I came back that afternoon. I don’t know if I will be doing that again if I have student appointments…

Saturday-1 hour of BodyPump. I made it through every song without taking a break! Also I painted some rooms in our new house, which totally counts as a workout. Even more so since half of a room I did while baby wearing George because he is teething FOUR teeth and hates naps again.

Monday-40 minute training run.

Tuesday-30 minute training run.

Impressed by:

I am pretty proud of myself for managing to get in all of my training runs while packing up a house and moving. I kind of lucked out that in my training plan this week was a recovery week with smaller runs. But I still hit that pavement even though I didn’t want to.

Struggled with:

Not any big struggles this week. I am feeling pretty good about my runs, and I got a lot of cross training in with the move.

Did I meet my goal from last week?

My goal was to make it to two group classes this week. With some of our moving plans, the second class just wasn’t feasible. However, I did get in at least one!

What is my goal for next week?

Since we have moved to the country, our road is not the most runner friendly. There are no sidewalks and lots of curves which is not ideal if you are running on the road. (And never mind ever taking the dogs or stroller with me.) I want to find some new terrain close to our house that I can run on, perhaps exploring more of the Katy Trail.

Fitness Thoughts:

I am still debating cancelling our gym membership. It will be a 30 minute drive for me to go to my Saturday class, and I just don’t know if I have the motivation to do that. I would still use it a few times a week after work, but that is to run and not a class. And I can run anywhere. Does anyone know of a good online program or DVD set that does guided weightlifting? I want something that is 30-60 minutes and just weight lifting. I don’t want to print out a plan from Pinterest; I want a video. I know that I don’t do as well without watching someone do the moves. Does this exist, and without having me spend a bunch of money? Or maybe I should spend the money so that would be motivation to actually use it…

This is why working out during the work day is not exactly the best…

10 Dream Destinations

I love traveling to new places and exploring the culture (mostly the food) in these cities.

I have been out of the country one time in my life, and that was to the British Virgin Islands. And while I would go back in a heartbeat (Seriously, someone want to fund my way to those wonderful beaches?), I have many other places on my dream list that I have never seen.

Hopefully someday these will become a reality (when I invent some new academic success strategy and become rich).

The land of my people. Seriously, where do you think the name “Glinn” came from? Also who wouldn’t want to go to a place that is green and where castle are abundant? And then there is the beer.

Maldives Islands

I am fairly certain in another life I was a mermaid so the ocean is where my heart is. (And I live landlocked in Missouri…) This place just looks so serene and wonderful. I want to be in one of those bungalows until I die.

Jamaica

I am telling you I am meant to be in the water, on the water, near the water. Bath tubs don’t count. I know a lot of people who have gone to Jamaica and have loved it. Yes please.

I mean seriously. Every picture I have seen of this city makes me drool in anticipation. The food makes me drool too.

Thailand

I want to go to A LOT of places in Thailand. This is a hotel advertisement for the Four Seasons where they have elephants roaming the property. Enough said, take me there. But honestly, the food, the animals, the scenery is just all amazingly beautiful there that this country is high on my list of must dos.

I feel like I should be on the set of the Bachelor here. So obviously this would be for just Tom and I. Sorry George! (not that I would necessarily bring him along the others though.) Beach and fruity drinks by candlelight and torches, OK!

South Africa

I couldn’t narrow it down to just one city in South Africa. Honestly, I really want to spend a whole summer there. So many things I want to see and experience. The animals are really what are drawing me there, mostly the elephants. This is definitely a place that I would have to take some considerable amount of time off to make the most of it. Just breathtaking.

New Zealand

Friends, New Zealand has bumped Australia off my list. Gasp, I know. (But seriously Lost did that for me. Who wants to disappear on a plane because of Australia?) I want to live in New Zealand. It is everything.

Santorini, Greece

There is just something magical about this place with the contrasting colors. I need to see it in person, pronto. And Tom and I are really into Greek food currently so that means the food is pulling me there.

Switzerland

The chocolate is calling me here let’s be real. And the views don’t hurt my eyes. This place just looks so relaxing and delightful.

So that is a brief look at my travel dreams. There are many other places I would love to go. Clearly if there are beaches or elephants, I must go.
