While I was home for the holidays, my mom wanted me to make a specific scarf that she could wear to work. Apparently the church she works at is always cold, and she wanted something simple and warm.
So while I was introducing my brother to all the wonders of the show Castle (we watched half of the first season one night), I made this.
I used a N crochet needle and left over yarn from a previous project.
Since I wanted to make it before I left Kansas City, I had to do something simple.
The main body is just double crochet stitches until I achieved my desired length.
To dress it up just a little I did decide to add the ruffle to the side. I am pretty impressed with myself that I made this ruffle up on the fly.
To make the ruffle: one single crochet, one double crochet, one triple crochet, one double crochet, one single crochet. Repeat to the ends.
Surprise! I then made it an infinity scarf by sewing the two ends together.

So, question: I’m kicking around the idea of picking up knitting/crocheting. (I’m not sure which; I just want to do whatever is easier.) My crafting abilities leave much to be desired, so I really need the baby step introduction. I was wondering what suggestions you have for someone starting out. (Certain youtube videos to watch? Books to buy? Which skill is easier?) I’m starting at ground zero, so any input will help me out. Thanks!
My basic suggestions for starting out are two things: thick simple yarn and a big needle. The biggest mistake for a newbie is that they try to do something fancy and frilly the first time out the gate. You need something simple to practice making the stitches. Also don’t expect to make something right away. It takes most people two or three items to make something worth using. I would suggest making scarves off the bat just to have something to practice that is quick. I personally am biased to crochet. It does only have one needle, but they both have their merits and people will generally pick one or the other. I just have been doing crochet since I was 7 so it is much more natural to me.
